Innovation

Innovation isn’t just a buzzword—it’s our foundation.
At Smith Board Co., every board we make is the result of structured experimentation, advanced engineering, and constant iteration. From the earliest concept sketch to the final ride test, we use cutting-edge tools and a strategic innovation framework to build the most progressive wakesurf boards in the world.

Our commitment to innovation is grounded in three core areas:

  • High-fidelity simulation tools like CFD and FEA to model performance before we shape foam
  • Next-generation materials that improve strength, reduce weight, and minimize environmental impact
  • A structured innovation process that ensures we move quickly but deliberately from idea to implementation

How We Innovate

1. Simulation-Driven Design

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

We simulate water and air flow around each board design to evaluate how shape, rocker, rails, and contours interact with the wave. CFD helps us reduce drag, fine-tune lift, and maximize control—before a single prototype hits the water.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

FEA allows us to test the structural integrity and flex profile of our boards under stress. This ensures our boards ride smoothly, last longer, and respond exactly how riders expect in high-pressure moments.

2. Material Innovation

We are constantly exploring new materials—from advanced carbon layups to sustainable foam cores. These materials aren’t chosen just for the sake of newness—they’re vetted for real performance gains in strength, flex, weight, and feel. And when we find something that works better, we integrate it into our next build cycle.

3. The Innovation Framework

We use a focused, structured process to guide innovation—from early exploration to final product. This allows us to move quickly without losing direction. We also look beyond our industry, drawing inspiration from aerospace, automotive, and other high-performance sectors to bring cutting-edge technologies into wakesurfing.

Rather than chasing trends, we focus our energy where it matters—on the materials, modeling tools, and production technologies that push the boundaries of board performance.

4. Collaboration & Exploration

We're not doing this alone. We work with select partners to expand our capabilities—from external engineers and materials experts to riders who stress-test our ideas in real conditions. This ecosystem helps us accelerate development without compromising quality.

Our Goal

To build the most innovative wakesurf boards on the planet—and to never stop improving.
