As the wakesurfing season winds down, it's the perfect time to transition into maintenance mode and show your board some love. Proper care in the off-season doesn’t just keep your board looking great; it also extends its lifespan and ensures peak performance when you hit the water again. Check out our essential tips for post-season board care, designed to keep your ride in top shape year-round.

1. Rinse It Down, Dry It Out

Before storing your board, give it a thorough rinse with fresh water. This step is crucial for clearing off any salt, grime, or lake residue that can degrade materials over time. Pay special attention to any crevices around the edges and fin boxes where grime loves to hide. After rinsing, let the board dry completely—moisture left on the board can lead to unwanted issues down the line, like mold or material breakdown. Remember: no moisture means no surprises later on!

Tip for durability: Get into the habit of rinsing your board after every session during the season, too—it’s a small step that goes a long way.

2. Keep It Cozy

Extreme temperatures can wreak havoc on a board’s materials, so aim to store your board in a temperature-stable environment. Whether it's scorching hot or freezing cold, both ends of the spectrum can lead to warping, cracking, or other damage that affects performance. Indoors is ideal—keep it away from garages or sheds that might experience severe fluctuations. By keeping your board cozy, you’re setting yourself up for a smooth season when you’re ready to ride again.

Pro tip: A little insulation goes a long way. If an indoor spot isn’t available, consider wrapping your board in a protective cover.

3. Ditch the Fins

If your board has removable fins, take them off before storing. Leaving the fins attached can put stress on the fin boxes, causing them to warp over time. Removing the fins helps keep your board’s structure in top condition, so it’s ready to go come spring.

Quick hack: Store your fins and hardware in a labeled bag, so you know exactly where to find them when it’s time to reassemble your board.

4. Bag It Up

A padded board bag is more than just a carry-on for your board—it’s a shield that protects your board from dust, scratches, and other elements that could lead to minor (or major) dings. For bonus points, choose a bag with UV protection if your storage spot gets any sunlight exposure. UV rays can damage your board’s finish over time, so a bag with built-in protection can make a big difference.

Why UV protection matters: Even indirect sunlight can fade or weaken your board’s surface, so consider this bag upgrade an investment in your board’s future.

5. Patch Up Dings

Dings, dents, and cracks are inevitable after a season of epic rides, but winter is the perfect time to address them. These imperfections might not seem urgent, but they can become bigger issues if left untreated. A quick repair now ensures your board will be water-tight and ready to go come spring. Plus, patching up dings can help prevent any structural damage that might occur over time.

Dylan grew up swimming, boating and wakesurfing in Colorado, and is focused on merging that passion and background with engineering at Smith Board Co. While leading our engineering team, Dylan gained his B.S. in Computer Science and is currently pursuing a PhD in Bioinformatics at Indiana University. He loves dogs, and spends his time reading, writing (read his blog posts on the science behind wakesurfing here), and spending as much time out on the water as possible. During his time in school, he also found a passion for working for others when volunteering with Camp Kesem at CU, Boulder, which led to moving overseas to Thailand for a year to teach English to middle schoolers and highschoolers.

At SBC, Dylan is working to understand the science behind wakesurfing, apply engineering principles to board design, and test new ideas to build better boards.
